This another piece I've been working on. I've been going on short hikes behind the cabin and collecting different treasures I find. I've found some amazing insects that are perfectly preserved and dry. I also have so many rocks you wouldn't believe it. It's just like when I was a kid and called the little black rocks "dog noses." After I bring everything back I identify it and put it in a jar. Each jar will have a label when I'm finished.
I thought I'd also put this picture up because its so funny. This is my grandparents and all the kids at the cabin. My mom is the one on the far right. It's interesting staying here because there is so much of my family history preserved here. The bar that my grandparents owned is right down the road as well. In the piece above I was thinking about this preservation of the natural environment as well as my family's stories.
This is so amazing! I absolutely love the idea of the jars, and also that they have the colorful fabric as their lids. I am so excited to see the specimens, as I am a huge fan of preserving once living things. Here's a little story you might like.
ReplyDeleteOn these hills above my Uncles house there are these massive telephone structures with spikes on them to prevent people from climbing them. Well, someone's pet falcon escaped and (feet bound by leather and a loose string) was caught on the last rung of this structure...just above the height of a person of my size. He was left there to die...perfectly intact and dangling. So I snatched him up and have collected some feathers and what will soon be just the skull. I was hesitant to take the whole bird because it did have some wear and I don't think my Uncle would appreciate it near his house. Anyway...I am using the skull for my next piece!

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to share everything with you. My favorite thing I've found is a giant Plains Lubber. Its really big and perfectly preserved. That's amazing that you found that bird. I love finding bones. The jar on the right is actually some rabbit tails that I found...there's three of them. There wasn't any other fur but my only guess was that they were left by a coyote or something.
No way! I had to look up what a plains lubber is. haha. That is so neat! You should ask the Evergreen insect collections fellow if there are any small pinning boxes lying around that you could have...unless you are putting it in one of the jars, that would be beautiful as well. That is interesting that you just found the rabbit tails, and not the rabbit. In a few days we shall swap stories and specimens!
